I'm not yet a mother and I can't seem to distinguish - help me identify if you can. Let me cite two situations for your judgement.
Situation #1:
I was in a children's party (sort of) organized by a colleague who wanted to celebrate his birthday with the kids in Tabor Hills, a community somewhere in Talamban. One mother was cheering for his son who joined in one of the games while carrying an infant at the same time. The infant was resting on her shoulder and she could not see what the infant was doing. The poor infant was trying to open a jelly candy using his one hand and his mouth. I was so alarmed when i saw the baby! What if he choked and the plastic must be dirty! I was thinking, why is the mother not paying attention to her baby? I tapped the mother's shoulder and told her to watch for her baby. The mother just gave me a look i can't identify and lazily got the candy from her baby's hand. Huh! What if! What if the baby choked!?
Situation #2:
Was inside a jeepney on my way home and then 3 passengers embarked - a mother tagging along 2 boys, ages 4-7 maybe. I assume 'twas her sons. They sat at the corner, rear of the jeepney near the steps. The boys were seated at the rear end and i was in front of them. In the middle of the trip, i noticed that the boys were sleeping and they would tend to dislodge everytime the driver made a sudden stop or turn. I was so horrified they might fall from their seats and roll. I took a look at the mother who was just sitting calmly. She didn't even bother to put her arms in front of the kids to at least protect them. A few more minutes and i can't take the rather dangerous scene in front of me anymore. I told the mother, "hey, your kids are sleeping, watch out for them, they might fall." I thought i sounded like a 45-year-old woman who had so much experience around kids. The mother did not respond and she just sat still! I was irritably disgusted. The mother must have noticed my furious look and she gave out a sigh and an expression all the more i couldn't identify like the mother in situation #1. I thought, for a moment she just gave me an attitude and then she extended her hand to hold the jeepney railing. Her right hand now in front of her kids. That's when i felt a bit relieved. What if! What if the kids fall from the jeepney!?
Now, tell me what it is. Mother instincts or plain paranoia or is it something else?
